Statement: World Rugby confirm lengthy ban for 'racist abuse'

A Spain Under-20 player has been handed a seven-match suspension after an independent disciplinary committee upheld a citing for racist verbal abuse during the World Rugby U20 Championship.
The case stemmed from Spain's Pool D clash with France in Kutaisi on 2 July, after the France U20 team management referred an allegation to the independent citing commissioner concerning Spain player Mateo Aragón.

An independent disciplinary committee, chaired by Jenifer Donovan and joined by former player Victoria Irwin and former referee Juan Pablo Spirandelli, reviewed the incident.
After examining match footage, audio recordings and witness statements from members of both the French and Spanish teams, the panel ruled that the player had not proven, on the balance of probabilities, that the citing should be overturned.
Seven-match ban confirmed
The disciplinary committee applied a mid-range entry point of 12 matches before considering mitigating factors.
However, because of the racial nature of the offence, the panel decided not to award full mitigation, reducing the sanction to seven matches. The specific fixtures the suspension will cover are yet to be confirmed.
World Rugby statement
In its statement, World Rugby reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on discrimination.
"There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and any complaint of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby and its disciplinary personnel."
The governing body also urged supporters to show restraint online.
"While noting that emotions understandably run high when such complaints are brought, World Rugby urges the rugby family to be respectful of all individuals involved, particularly via the forum of social media."
Under World Rugby Regulation 17, Aragón has 48 hours from receiving the written judgment to lodge an appeal.
A full written decision from the disciplinary committee is expected to be released in due course.
