Taulupe Faletau stood down from rugby with immediate effect

Cardiff confirmed the experienced No.8 has suffered a serious shoulder injury, picked up during last weekend’s defeat to the Sharks in Durban.

The 35-year-old had only just returned to the starting lineup for the first time since New Year’s Day. However, his long-awaited comeback was cut short after just 45 minutes.

Faletau landed awkwardly in a challenge and was forced to leave the field, using his jersey as a makeshift sling — a worrying visual that has now been confirmed as a significant injury.

There had been optimism that Faletau would feature in Cardiff’s upcoming Challenge Cup clash against Benetton this Saturday. Those hopes have now been firmly extinguished.

Head coach Corniel van Zyl has confirmed the veteran back-rower will play no further part this season.

Born in Tonga before moving to Wales as a child, Faletau has gone on to become one of the most decorated back-rowers of his generation.

He first rose to prominence with the Newport Gwent Dragons, where his explosive carrying and calm control at the base of the scrum quickly marked him out as a future international star.

A move to Bath Rugby followed, where he further cemented his reputation in the Premiership, before eventually returning to Wales to join Cardiff Rugby.

He has also represented the British & Irish Lions on three tours, underlining his status among the elite.
