Another England star could quit after Steve Borthwick snub

Rugby Transfer News
Max Ojomoh
Bath and England centre Max Ojomoh has been linked with a potential move away from The Rec next summer, which could have significant implications for his international future.
According to Midi Olympique, Ojomoh has been offered to several Top 14 clubs, although no specific teams have been named at this stage.
The 26-year-old came through Bath's academy before making his senior debut in 2019.
He enjoyed a trophy-laden 2025, helping the club win the Premiership Rugby Cup, Challenge Cup and Premiership title, while scoring in both the European and league finals.
However, his contract expires at the end of the season, leaving Bath facing the prospect of losing one of their most influential players.
Despite his impressive form in the Gallagher PREM and a standout performance on his Allianz Stadium debut against Argentina last autumn, Ojomoh has struggled to establish himself in Steve Borthwick's plans.
The centre made an immediate impression, earning man of the match honours during England's 27-23 victory over Los Pumas in November 2025.
Ojomoh scored a try and provided two assists, including a superb cross-field kick, but has since been overlooked for further international opportunities.
With just two England caps to his name, the Bath star has seemingly fallen behind several other options in the midfield.
The inclusion of Bristol Bears centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg will have further complicated his route back into the side, despite Ojomoh's impressive performances at club level.
There is still a potential pathway back into the England set-up, with Ojomoh continuing to feature in the England A squad.
He is set to start against Argentina XV tomorrow, offering another opportunity to impress the national selectors.
Ojomoh was also included in England's squad for last week's three-day training camp ahead of the Nations Championship, with Seb Atkinson sidelined through injury.
However, he was subsequently left out of the main squad after Atkinson's fitness was confirmed.
A move to France would end Ojomoh's immediate Test ambitions, with RFU eligibility rules preventing players based overseas from representing England.
That would put him in a similar position to Jack and Tom Willis, who have also seen their international prospects affected by moves abroad.
However, with opportunities seemingly limited under Borthwick, the financial and sporting benefits of a move to the Top 14 could prove difficult to ignore.
Midi Olympique's report also mentioned fellow Bath centres Ollie Lawrence and Cam Redpath as potential candidates for moves to France.
Lawrence has reportedly attracted interest from Bayonne, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Bath's midfield ahead of next season.

Six players who quit England under Steve Borthwick

Since Steve Borthwick took charge, several big-name England internationals have moved to France, effectively ending their international careers under the RFU's overseas selection rules.

1. Lewis Ludlam – Toulon (2024)

Ludlam left Northampton Saints after winning the 2024 Premiership title. The 25-cap back-rower featured at the 2023 World Cup but sacrificed his England eligibility to join Toulon.

2. Zach Mercer – Toulon (2025)

Mercer returned to England with Gloucester in 2023, hoping to earn an international recall. However, he failed to break into Borthwick's plans and headed back to France two years later.

3. Jack Willis – Toulouse (2022)

Willis joined Toulouse after Wasps collapsed, shortly before Borthwick's appointment. He played at the 2023 World Cup under a special exemption but has since been unavailable for England.

4. Tom Willis – Bordeaux-Bègles (2026)

Willis left Saracens after becoming one of the Premiership's standout forwards. His move to Bordeaux means both brothers are now unavailable for England selection.

5. Manu Tuilagi – Bayonne (2024)

The powerful centre won 60 England caps before joining Bayonne. His final international appearance came against France in the 2024 Six Nations.

6. Kyle Sinckler – Toulon (2024)

Sinckler joined Toulon after falling out of favour with Borthwick. The 68-cap prop last played for England at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
