Springboks v Scotland referee was pulled from game at the last minute

French referee Pierre Brousset will take charge of one of the biggest matches of the Nations Championship this weekend when the Springboks host Scotland at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The 36-year-old continues his rise on the international stage after establishing himself as one of World Rugby’s leading officials, with Saturday’s clash marking another major appointment in his growing Test career.

Brousset is a former scrum-half who walked away from playing at the age of 19 to pursue refereeing full-time. By 2018, he had become one of the youngest officials in the French Top 14 and has since gone on to officiate Tests in the Rugby Championship, Autumn Nations Series and age-grade international tournaments.

His breakthrough at the highest level almost came earlier than expected. Brousset had been due to referee his first Six Nations fixture in 2025 when Ireland faced Italy in Dublin, only for injury to force him to withdraw shortly before kick-off. It was a bitter disappointment after years of working towards the milestone.

Now firmly established among World Rugby’s elite referees, Brousset has been entrusted with another high-profile encounter as world champions South Africa welcome Scotland in Pretoria.

Speaking previously about his journey into officiating, Brousset explained how a chance conversation changed the course of his career.

“I was a player until I was 20. I had the opportunity to take the referee’s exam by chance when I was talking to someone about refereeing. I thought it might be interesting to know the laws properly.

“Two years later I stopped playing to try my hand at refereeing. I was asked to make a choice if I wanted to reach the highest level.

“I realised where my playing career would end, so I decided to give refereeing everything. My first goal was to reach Fédérale 1 within five years. I started to immerse myself in refereeing and here I am, achieving one goal after another.”

Brousset will oversee a fixture that could have a major impact on the Nations Championship standings, with the Springboks looking to build on their opening-round victory while Scotland aim to record one of the biggest away wins in their recent history.
