Eight current players who would be nailed on for England Saxons caps

A mainstay during the early 2000s, the whole thing has been defunct since 2016, but we reckon it’s high time to give it another bash, if only to give these lads a bit of a run-out in an England shirt…

This versatile back three player qualifies for New Zealand, Australia and England, but if a cap is to come, it is likely from the latter, as Woodward now plies his trade in the Premiership. His reliability under the high ball, kicking game and ability as a counter-attacker earn him a spot here. A Saxons coach would call him, text him and leave him several voicemails to get him involved.

Nine tries in his first 12 appearances for English champions Saracens shows just how good of a finisher he is. However, Eddie Jones seems to be happy relying on the same old faces, making him free for our Saxons.

Exeter's man-mountain out on the pitch every time he plays, Ewers is one of the most physical and abrasive back-row forwards in European rugby. He'd be the first name on the teamsheet for the Saxons.

Welch became the Falcons youngest ever club captain in 2012 when, at the age of 22, he took on the leadership role. Skippering the side to the Championship title in his first season he has since led them in the Premiership, where his tireless work ethic and relentless tackling have marked him as a stand-out performer. He's never even been considered for England, but we'd consider him for the Saxons without a moment's hesitation.

As a former prop, Dunn brings his effective scrummaging and ball-carrying to play in his role at hooker. Flirted with an England call-up earlier this year but we think he'd slip straight into our Saxons XV.

A totem in the line-out for Newcastle before joining Leicester Tigers, Green topped the Opta stats during the 2017-18 Premiership season for both takes and steals, offering a consistent threat in the set-piece and around the field. He's unlucky to have not had a sniff at an England call-up.

A powerful, hard-hitting ball carrier, Wray is another highly skilled graduate from the Saracens academy who has gone on to achieve success at the senior level, making over 170 appearances for the club. He'd be great to watch in an England shirt.

The only capped player on our list. A pacy scrum half with a sharp eye for a gap, reliable kicking game and good service, Simpson has spent the last decade as one of the foremost No.9’s in the English game. However, after earning just one cap, the Saxons would be an obvious opportunity for him to showcase his skills in international rugby once again.
