Head, shoulders, knees and toes - The most injury prone rugby players

They've won major honours, so this isn't saying these rugbystars didn't reach the top of their profession. It's more of a wonder about the extra levels they could have reached.

Imagine Jonny Wilkinson wasn't hampered by a dodgy shoulder from 2004 or Manu Tuilagi's England career hadn't stalled? That's what we're pondering here.

May - Suffers ankle ligament damage in Newcastle's defeat by Gloucester, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

December 13 - Newcastle confirm Wilkinson has fractured a facet in his shoulder - known as a 'stinger'. Falcons predict an absence of two to three weeks. December 28 - Suffers a recurrence of his shoulder injury and has to come off during Newcastle's win over Northampton.

2004: February - Ruled out of Six Nations after shoulder operation.

October - Ruled out for up to six weeks with a haematoma in the upper right arm and has to stand down as England captain for autumn Tests. January - Suffers knee ligament damage in Newcastle's Heineken Cup defeat in Perpignan. March - Suffers medial ligament damage on Newcastle comeback against Harlequins.

July - Suffers shoulder injury in British and Irish Lions' second Test defeat
in New Zealand and misses third match.

September - Ruled out of early season action after undergoing an appendix
operation.

2006: January - Suffers a torn adductor muscle.

September - Forced off with a knee ligament injury during Newcastle's home game
against Worcester, effectively ending his hopes of playing in the autumn Test.

November - Makes comeback for Newcastle against Bristol but suffers kidney
damage and requires one month's rest.

2007: September - Suffers fresh injury blow as a twisted ankle in training
rules him out of England World Cup opener against USA.

May - Undergoes shoulder surgery which keeps him out of England's summer tour of New Zealand. September 30 - Suffers suspected knee ligament damage during Newcastle's Guinness Premiership defeat at Gloucester. He never played for the Falcons again.

The teenage Warburton suffered a hamstring injury which was to keep him out of the whole of Wales' 2008 U20s Six Nations campaign.

2008: Having skippered Wales U20s to the semi-final of the Junior World Cup from No 8 in the summer, he was then consigned to some five months on the sidelines after tearing ACJ shoulder ligaments while training.

2010: June - On just his third start for his country, the young flanker broke his jaw in the end of season international against South Africa,

2011: March - Having established himself as the successor to Martyn Williams as Wales’ openside, Warburton started all five matches during the 2011 Six Nations only to hobble out of the final match against France

2012: February - It was to be an injury-strewn Six Nations for the now Wales skipper during the Grand Slam campaign, starting off with a dead leg in the Dublin opener versus Ireland which kept him out of the next game against Scotland.

February: Having recovered to face England at Twickenham, Warburton produced one of the performances of his career as the Triple Crown was secured, which was all the more notable as he picked up a medial knee ligament sprain during the game. March: After sitting out the Italy match, the skipper was back for the Grand Slam clincher against France, only to end up lifting the trophy with one arm lying immobile at his side having sustained nerve damage to his right shoulder.

October: Warburton’s Twitter feed wasn’t for the faint hearted after he dislocated the middle finger on his left hand during the Blues’ Euro clash with Sale at the Salford City Stadium

February - Another bang to his shoulder against Ireland kept him out of the following week’s trip to Paris. June - Handed the Lions captaincy for the 2013 tour of Australia, led by example with an immense display in the second Test in Melbourne only to be forced off late on after suffering an 8cm tear in his hamstring,

December - The stinger he suffered to his shoulder against Australia in Cardiff added further pain on a frustrating day when Wales went down to yet another narrow defeat to the Wallabie

2014: March - Getting through a Six Nations campaign unscathed was becoming a problem for Warburton and in the final day rout of Scotland he sustained a dislocated right shoulder

October - Another day, another stinger. There was at least a memorable win to ease the pain, as the Warburton-led Wales ended their long wait for a victory over the Springboks.

2015: November - Warburton’s rivalry with Justin Tipuric has been an ongoing and it was during a coming together between the pair in an Ospreys-Blues clash that he sustained ankle damage which meant a two month lay-off.

2016: April - He faced a race against time to make Wales’ tour of New Zealand after spraining the AC joint in his right shoulder in a heavy collision with the Ospreys’ Dan Lydiate.

October - the Blues flanker fractured his cheekbone in a clash of heads with Leinster’s Josh van der Flier.

2017: April - Warburton was ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury, meaning he was only fit for the Lions tour only by a whisker.

September - Out for six months after injuring his chest in a Premiership match against Newcastle.

2014: September - Injures his groin in second league game of the season. Misses three games.

2014: October - Out for 15 months after a recurrence of groin injury in Champions Cup match versus Ulster.

2016: April - Injures knee in Champions Cup semi-final defeat by Racing 92.

2016: May - On his first game back, injures groin in Premiership semi-final against Saracens. Misses England's tour of Australia.

2016: September - Out for two months with a damaged groin in first league match of the season.

2017: January - Injures right knee seven minutes into league match against Saracens and is ruled out for the season.

September -Injures his knee again and is ruled out for between four and eight weeks after a minor operation.

: surgery on his foot, successive back injuries, including a prolapsed disc after a car accident; dislocated thumb, ruptures his AC joint in his shoulder.

Worst injury:Innocuous car accident when his motor was shunted from behind saw Farrell needing back surgery after suffering a prolapsed disc. Meant he did not feature at all in his first season at Saracens after a high-profile switch from Rugby League.

Therefore, after Barely stubbed a toe during an illustrious Rugby League career but suffered a catalogue of injuries after signing for Saracens.
