“A Fierce Competitor” – Former Bath Captain Danny Grewcock Inducted into Premiership Rugby Hall of Fame

The second inductee has been confirmed for the Premiership Rugby Hall of Fame Class of 2024, as Danny Grewcock is set to join the illustrious group. Second-row Grewcock joins winger Paul Sackey in this year’s cohort, with one more star name to follow.

Regarded as one of the most fearsome locks in English rugby, Grewcock made over 200 club appearances for Saracens and Bath Rugby, in successful Premiership stints. The former Bath captain was heralded as the Blue, Black and White’s key player in the 2008 Challenge Cup Final victory over Worcester Warriors, playing alongside England Head Coach Steve Borthwick, in one of the finest partnerships witnessed in the English top flight.

The 2003 Rugby World Cup winner won a total of 69 England caps, as well as five Test caps for the British & Irish Lions. Now High Performance Rugby Manager at Clifton College, Bristol, Grewcock remains involved in the game and is still an avid viewer of England and Gallagher Premiership Rugby.

On being inducted into the Premiership Rugby Hall of Fame, Grewcock, 51, said: “It’s a huge honour.

“Sometimes you forget what your former job was, you can be very busy working in a school and to then get a reminder that you sent a few years playing in the Premiership is incredibly pleasing.

“To get the honour to come along to Twickenham and watch this year’s final is incredible – my family are chuffed to bits. It is a great honour and very pleasing.”

Grewcock played with some legends of the game when he signed for Saracens. Francois Pienaar, Philippe Sella and Michael Lynagh were all teammates of his when he burst onto the Premiership scene.

He added: “I remember speaking to some of my university mates in slight disbelief that in the locker room I was with 1995 Rugby World Cup heroes and legends of the game.

“I didn’t expect to be sat next to them, let alone in the same team – I thoroughly enjoyed my four years there. My career definitely went too far further places than I ever thought it would go to.

“Bath was great in 2007 to 2008 too, and in 2004 when we got to the final the boys hit a good vein of form, but couldn’t quite win it.

“But I spent 10 years as a player and five years in the academy at another brilliant club and made a brilliant set of friends.”

Grewcock and Sackey will be joined by one more Premiership Rugby great who will be announced in the coming weeks. Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby, said:

“Danny was an extremely tough and physical player.

“He was a fierce competitor who was the main stay of both the Saracens and the Bath engine room for many years.

“Danny was regarded as one of the most skilful set-piece technicians of his generation winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup and being capped five times by the British & Irish Lions.”
