“A Matter of Urgency” – Progressive Rugby Professor Issues Statement on TMO Incident in Saracens v Harlequins

Progressive Rugby have issued a statement on the controversial incident that took place, in the match between Saracens and Harlequins last Saturday. A major talking point of the match was when the TMO was overheard to not show a replay for possible foul play, after Austin Healey had previously highlighted the offence in his match commentary.

TMO Stuart Terheege was inadvertently recorded discussing with referee Christophe Ridley, his reluctance to check a potential foul play incident involving Owen Farrell. The incident looked to also involve Harlequins’ Stephan Lewies, who had previously taken a trip to the sin bin. The incident had been brought to attention by TNT Sports commentary, yet recieved no further attention by the match officials.

Professor John Fairclough of player welfare group Progressive Rugby shared his thoughts on the altercation, and said: “Whatever the reason, it is clear a decision has been taken to ignore foul, reckless or dangerous play because of concern that it had been highlighted by a pundit. This is hugely concerning and a clear dereliction of a match official’s duty to ensure player safety. An explanation should be sought as a matter or urgency.”
