Barbarians Jersey of Greatest Ever Try Expected to Sell for £200,000

Gareth Edwards’ match-worn jersey, in which he scored the greatest ever try for the Barbarians, is going on sale at auction. Expect to bring in a figure worth £200,000, this relic of rugby’s history is certainly a sort after item. Edwards wore the famous black and white hooped jersey for the Barbarians, in an exhibition match against New Zealand, 50 years ago in 1973.

Edwards scored the legendary try in just the second minute of the game. And the try is a highlight that has been replayed countless times throughout history. The auction will take place next month, under the hammer of Rogers Jones Auctioneers and Valuers in Wales.

Sir Gareth spoke to Sportsmail about the decision to put his famous jerseys up for sale: “It’s not sad, but it’s the end of an era. I don’t need physical things for the memories I’ve got. They’re all in the mind.”

“I’m not selling the shirts because I need any money. It will be for the benefit of my children and grandchildren. The money will benefit certain charities and the family.”

The jersey is one of a 39-item lot, that is expected to raise over £400,000 for charities. The jersey alone is anticipated to raise half of the target, and will become the most expensive piece of rugby memorabilia sold at auction. The current title is held by Dave Gallaher’s match worn jersey, as he captained the ‘Original All Blacks’ 1905/06 tour of the British Isles.
