Bath and England star Alfie Barbeary banned over high tackle

English rugby sensation Alfie Barbeary is set to serve a three-week suspension following an independent Disciplinary Hearing.

Despite the setback, there’s a chance for Barbeary to make a swift return to the field on Monday, January 29, 2024, provided he opts for and successfully completes a World Rugby Coaching Intervention.

Barbeary faced scrutiny for two incidents during the 29-25 victory against French Top 14 leaders Racing 92, as highlighted by citing commissioner Tim Lowry (Ireland). Referee Andrea Piardi issued yellow cards for both incidents.

The first incident occurred in the 6th minute when Barbeary was accused of tackling Racing 92 fullback Max Spring in a dangerous manner, violating Law 9.13.

In the 75th minute, Barbeary was alleged to have struck Racing 92 scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec with his forearm in a dangerous manner, breaching Law 9.11.

While the committee upheld the first citing complaint, noting the dangerous tackle on Spring, they determined that Barbeary’s challenge on Le Garrec warranted a yellow card but not a red card. As a result, the citing complaint for the second incident was dismissed.
