Starting in the 2023-24 season, Dan McKellar will take over as the new head coach of the Leicester Tigers.
The 46-year-old has been a part of Australia’s coaching staff since 2021, and previously led the Brumbies to a Super Rugby Australia victory in 2020.
According to The Telegraph, Leicester’s players were informed of the appointment yesterdayy, and it is reported that McKellar has notified Rugby Australia of his decision.
The exact start date for his new role has not been finalized.
However, according to sources in Australia with knowledge of the move, who spoke on condition of anonymity, McKellar intends to take up the role before the Rugby World Cup, which starts in September.
McKellar reportedly beat Michael Cheika and Rassie Erasmus to the Leicester job. Reports also said Tigers officials had consulted Borthwick on whom he believed should get the job.
The 2023-24 Premiership season is scheduled to begin on October 14, with the World Cup final taking place two weeks later on October 28.
Jones is said to be keen to retain McKellar’s services if possible, and is currently assembling his coaching team for the Wallabies.
