Steve Borthwick move blocked by Bristol

  • RFU had announced the former England Captain as the new forwards coach earlier today
  • Borthwick only joined Bristol as forwards coach following the World Cup
Bristol says they have not reached a deal with the Rugby Football Union over the appointment of Steve Borthwick as England forwards coach.

The RFU earlier released a statement confirming former England captain Borthwick will be the first addition to new head coach Eddie Jones’ backroom team.

Borthwick only joined Bristol as forwards coach following the Rugby World Cup last month, having worked under Jones with Japan.

“We have not agreed Steve Borthwick can leave our employment,” said Bristol.

The club added they had not given the RFU permission to speak to Borthwick and would “take all reasonable actions as necessary to protect the club’s position”.

Before his employers intervened, Borthwick had revealed his enthusiasm and excitement to take up the role: “This is a huge honour to be asked as these chances don’t come around often.

“We have an exciting group of players in England and I am really looking forward to the challenge and getting England beating the best teams in the world.”
