Dai Young backs surprising player for Lions spot on New Zealand tour

  • Dai Young expects Christian Wade to be in contention for a Lions spot
  • The 25-year-old extended his Aviva Premiership tally to 15 for the campaign today
  • Wade also twice got the better of Wales and Lions wing George North
Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young has revealed he would be “very surprised” if Christian Wade was not in the running to tour with the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand this summer.

“Warren Gatland’s got an extensive knowledge of all players, so I’d be surprised if he doesn’t know his strengths and I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t looking at him seriously for the Lions,” said Young.

“I wouldn’t swap Christian for anybody, people talk about his defensive frailties but that was a couple of years ago.

“He’s put that to bed, shown he can defend and is making far better decisions on when to come in and when to stay out.

“And when he gets the ball something’s going to happen.

“He stresses defences, he’s far more powerful than people give him credit (for), and we all know about his gas.

“He’s had a good couple of months and he can’t do any more towards his goal of getting back onto the international stage.”
