England’s prop, Joe Marler, has practically confirmed his intention to retire from international rugby after the conclusion of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
In the aftermath of the match against Wales over the weekend, Marler offered an apology to a fan who sought his jersey.
He remarked, “I apologise, but I can’t give it to you. This will be my last one.”
This indicates that it would likely be his final start for England at Twickenham
Having previously retired from international rugby on two occasions, Marler had previously dropped hints that the upcoming 2023 Rugby World Cup would mark his final foray into the sport at this level.
Adding a humorous twist, Marler, who playfully labeled the young fan a ‘cheeky git’ for requesting his boots, ended up gifting the disappointed supporter his shorts.
In upcoming events, Ellis Genge is anticipated to take the starting spot in the match against Ireland next weekend, while the third-choice prop, Bevan Rodd, is slated to step in for the game against Fiji.
RUGBY QUIZ:
Joe Marler ‘proud’ of unwanted England record he currently holds
#1. Most carded player: James Haskell – 6
#2. Most caps without a try: Joe Marler – 80
The loosehead may have never managed a five-pointer for England over the course of his 80 caps, but it is still within his power to change that as he could force himself back into Steve Borthwick’s plans (unless he retires again).
Reacting to his record, Marler said: “Some people might call me crazy but I’m proud of it. Us props aren’t meant to score tries anyway,”
