England Rugby News
England player ratings vs Australia
Our England player ratings vs Australia are in following a fiercely contested Nations Championship showdown at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
Despite the pressure the side were under this week, they stood up to the task and blew the Wallabies away.
The hosts made a flying start, with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso having a try disallowed before Jamie George opened the scoring from a maul.
Ollie Chessum and Joe Heyes added further tries following a Ryan Lonergan penalty.
Australia struck back just before half-time, with Max Jorgensen intercepting Jack van Poortvliet's loose pass to score.
Van Poortvliet made amends minutes after the break, finishing off a flowing move started by Henry Pollock.
Pollock then turned finisher 55 minutes in, scoring with ease out wide before getting the crowd on their feet with his second just minutes later.
Filipo Daugunu and Jeremy Williams closed the deficit, but it wasn't enough, as England cruised to a comfortable victory, with Ben Spencer scoring a seventh try for the hosts late on.

England player ratings vs Australia

15. George Furbank — 7/10

Was effective with fairly limited touches. Played a nice pass to assist Ollie Chessum and generally carried very well.
His highlight came when he managed a brilliant line break and offload that led to England's fourth try, just after half-time.

14. Tommy Freeman — 8/10

Grew into the game following a slow start that saw him get very few touches on the ball.
Failed to take a chance from a kick-through, but did manage a nice assist for Jack van Poortvliet, while his aerial threat kept Australia guessing.

13. Henry Slade — 7/10

Linked up well with Seb Atkinson and was solid defensively, although perhaps not as involved in things as he would have liked.

12. Seb Atkinson — 7/10

Very solid defensively and looked assured as a playmaker, making a handful of nice offloads to set players away.
Seemed to complement Henry Slade pretty well. Unfortunate to be forced off due to injury.

11. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso — 8/10

At his best, but unfortunate to have been forced off after 40 minutes.
The winger found himself with plenty of touches, causing havoc on either wing as his side tried to get him the ball on numerous occasions.
Had a try disallowed early on for a forward pass earlier in the move, but was heavily involved in the second try after managing to break free into plenty of space, which opened things up out wide for Ollie Chessum.
Had to come off at the break and was replaced by Henry Pollock.

10. Fin Smith — 8/10

Was very good, as he usually is. Made some excellent passes that bypassed multiple defenders and caused a few issues for Australia.
Looked sharp and nailed a conversion from the touchline, even if he had missed one earlier.
Produced a very good tackle on Isaac Henry, who would have gone over for a try had Smith not been there.
A risky pass technically assisted Henry Pollock, although a defender very nearly intercepted it.

9. Jack van Poortvliet — 7/10

Started the game well and looked sharp, but all his hard work was undone just before the break when he threw a very poor pass out wide that Max Jorgensen latched onto to score a try, giving the Wallabies all the momentum going into the break.
Made amends minutes after half-time, finishing off a great move to restore a 16-point lead.

1. Fin Baxter — 6/10

Not involved in much during his 57-minute stint, but was solid enough at scrum time and put himself about around the field.

2. Jamie George — 7/10

George put in a good shift, with his lineout throwing solid and a try scored from the back of a maul.
Had a couple of dodgy throws, but overall did well in just under 60 minutes.

3. Joe Heyes — 6/10

Had a bit of a mixed bag of an afternoon, as he found himself largely undone by Angus Bell at scrum time.
Did score a try from a maul and made plenty of tackles, but was not at his absolute best.

4. Maro Itoje — 7/10

Trademark Itoje. Started the game well with a great charge-down that won the ball back, and generally made plenty of tackles and carries into traffic.
Didn't steal the show but was quietly effective, and looked good at lineout time.

5. Alex Coles — 6/10

Got through plenty of hard work off the ball and kept his side on top.
Perhaps not quite as involved as Itoje, but will be content with his performance.

6. Ollie Chessum — 7/10

Did really well at blindside and provided a lot of balance to the back row, adding the physicality that England really needed.
Produced a powerful finish in the corner.

7. Ben Curry — 7/10

Curry silenced the doubters who questioned his inclusion. Didn't get off to the best of starts, with a forward pass that resulted in an early try being disallowed.
Did well at the breakdown and made plenty of tackles, which was exactly what he was brought in to do.

8. Ben Earl — 8/10

Earl was the most dangerous carrier on the pitch, leading the match in that department, as he often does for England.
Had plenty of touches on the ball and did well to put pressure on the Wallabies.
The back row as a whole functioned really well, and Earl was a large part of that.

England replacements

16. Luke Cowan-Dickie — 6/10

17. Ellis Genge — 7/10

18. Will Stuart — 6/10

19. George Martin — 7/10

20. Greg Fisilau — 7/10

21. Henry Pollock — 8/10

Got the crowd on his side when he came on as a winger, replacing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso.
Looked incredibly comfortable out wide, scoring two tries from close range thanks to his excellent positioning, and carrying well when he got the ball.
Judging by this performance, it won't be the last time he plays on the wing for England.

22. Ben Spencer — N/A

23. Marcus Smith — 7/10
