The extent of Marcus Smith's injury has been revealed after the Harlequins fly-half missed the Gallagher PREM opener against Bath.
The England international now faces a spell on the sidelines.
Smith was one of four key players unavailable for Quins, alongside Alex Dombrandt, George Furbank and Fin Baxter.
Despite their injury problems, Harlequins produced a spirited display at The Stoop before ultimately suffering a 17-33 defeat to Bath.
The club confirmed before the match that Smith had suffered a hand injury during the previous week's friendly against Edinburgh.
"Marcus Smith sustained a hand injury in last Friday's friendly against Edinburgh and is ruled out of this tomorrow’s Gallagher PREM opener against Bath Rugby.
"He will be assessed on a week-to-week basis by the Club's medical department in conjunction with England Rugby."
Former Harlequins winger Ugo Monye has now provided further details on Smith's condition while speaking on Rugby Union Weekly.
"Marcus has broken his finger. They're sitting on whether they give him time or it gets operated on.
Monye also explained how Smith's England EPS contract could influence the decision over his treatment, with England having a say in medical matters under the enhanced agreement.
"The difficulty with some of these lads now is because of this new enhanced agreement with England, it's not really a Quins decision anymore, it's an England one.
"So England can say to Fin Baxter, 'You've been suffering with your foot injury for six months, take the next month off...' They could do that with Marcus.
"They could say, 'Operate now, that's going to be five weeks and then you can get back into rugby in October. So, it's a wait and see."
Monye also provided updates on Furbank and Dombrandt.
Furbank suffered a concussion after being knocked unconscious by an accidental knee just 46 seconds into his Harlequins debut during the pre-season clash with Edinburgh.
Meanwhile, Dombrandt suffered an ACL injury during the summer and is expected to miss the majority of the season.
"George Furbank should be available for the weekend and Dombrandt, he's out for the majority of the season."
Monye also revealed that Harlequins are hopeful Baxter will not be sidelined for much longer.
Baxter last played in December 2025 before suffering a serious foot injury.
