When a player breaks straight into the England senior team at a young age, it’s often a sign of their quality.
But a lot of England stars have gone through the ranks of the age grade set up, doing their time, so to speak, with the under-20s including a bath of Eddie Jones' current squad.
Triumphing at the 2020 U20 Championship, their 29th title, the England youngsters have previously boasted some wonderful try-scorers.
Some of those have gone on to achieve great things in the game, but unfortunately that isn’t exclusively the case. So, who is who? We’ve taken a look at England’s top five U20 try-scorers of all-time from world championships and what happened next.

5. Zach Mercer

Under-20 tries: 5
Senior England caps: 5
Senior England tries: 0
Clubs played for: Bath
Hit or Miss? Miss
Capped twice by Eddie Jones in 2018, Mercer has failed to feature since, but the 23-year-old remains on the Red Rose radar knowing a big start to the season could get him back in contention for the 2021 Six Nations. Jury is still out.

4. Carl Fearns

Under-20 tries: 8
Senior England caps: 1
Senior England tries: 0
Clubs played for: Wasps
Hit or Miss? Miss
Hot on the heels of his departure from Lyon in the Top 14, Fearns recently signed a deal with Pro D2 side Rouen on a two-season contract. He was set to feature in Jones' England plans after agreeing a move to Gloucester from Lyon in 2017, but backed out of the deal to remain in France, which meant he remained eligible for international selection.

3. Nathan Earle

Under-20 tries: 6
Senior England caps: 0
Senior England tries: 0
Clubs played for: Sale sharks, Bath Rugby, Lyon Rouen
Hit or Miss? Miss
Since joining Harlequins from Saracens in 2018, the 26-year-old has seen his career disrupted by injury in recent times. On the international stage, Earle has part of Eddie Jones' Elite Player Squad (EPS) and toured with the international side to South Africa in the summer of 2018. However, for now he remains uncapped.

2. Gabriel Ibitoye

Under-20 tries: 8
Senior England caps: 0
Senior England tries: 0
Clubs played for: Harlequins, Agen
Hit or Miss? Miss
Ibitoye, who scored 10 tries in 21 appearances for Quins last season, has put his international career on hold to join French Top 14 side Agen. Rumours now suggest that the 22-year-old has been sounded out about representing France. Darn.

1. Christian Wade

Under-20 tries: 8
Senior England caps: 1
Senior England tries: 0
Clubs played for: Wasps
Hit or Miss? Miss
The 29-year-old was poised to become Premiership rugby's leading try-scorer when he made the shock decision to take up American Football and was swiftly picked up by the Bills. Wade's decision was fuelled by his constant omission from the international fold despite stellar form.
