Harry Potter star buys stake in rugby club in surprise move

The 40-year-old, best known for playing George Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films, has invested in the new Ultimate Sevens competition.

Led by former England and Great Britain captain Tom Mitchell, the tournament launched in Cardiff last weekend.

Phelps enjoyed a dream start as Atlantic Novas won the women’s event. Clan Tartan claimed the men’s title.

For Phelps, the move builds on a love of the sport that now extends to coaching his daughter.

“I’m a big rugby fan so I couldn’t wait to get involved in Ultimate Sevens,” he said.

“The game is fast-paced, and I love the innovations that Ultimate Sevens have brought to the sport.”

The actor also sees scope for sevens to reach new fans ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.

“Ultimate Sevens is so accessible. I’m getting involved as it has huge potential for growth globally, especially in the run-up to the LA Olympics.”

But one feature of the competition stood out when he chose to get involved.

“I also like the way Ultimate Sevens have ensured that the men’s and women’s teams are on an equal footing.

“My daughter has started playing and I’m coaching her at grassroots level.”

Nia Toliver was a standout for the Novas during their opening tournament win.

The former HSBC SVNS Women’s Rookie of the Year helped her side beat Sol Feroz in the final, giving their new part-owner an early reason to cheer.

Ultimate Sevens brings top men’s and women’s rugby sevens players together for fast-paced, one-day events. The series visits Cardiff and Biarritz before a London Grand Final crowns the champions.
