Former Saracens star to coach Fiji at Rugby World Cup

On Friday, it was announced that Simon Raiwalui, a former lock for Saracens and Racing Metro 92, will take on the role of coach for Fiji at the Rugby World Cup.

He is replacing Vern Cotter, a New Zealander who resigned just seven months before the tournament in France. Prior to his appointment, Raiwalui served as the high-performance general manager for the Fiji team.

It is unclear whether Raiwalui will continue in his position beyond the World Cup, which commences in September.

According to Daniel Whippy, the deputy chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union, Raiwalui is well-acquainted with Fiji Rugby, having previously captained the team, and his appointment is expected to be beneficial for both him and the team in the lead-up to the World Cup.

“Raiwalui is no stranger to Fiji Rugby,” said the union’s deputy chairman Whippy in a statement.

“I believe being a former captain, it will be smooth sailing for him and the team, especially with the Rugby World Cup just around the corner.”
