Reuben had been part of the academy set-up at Wasps prior to the club going out of business.

He wrote on Instagram: “Feeling very honoured to have signed my first professional contract with Northampton saints so grateful for this opportunity.”

“Reuben’s a bit different as he started off in the backs before transitioning into the back row last season,” said Academy Coach, Will Parkin.

“He’s previously been involved in Scottish Pathway, but has now come across to the England set-up and will play the upcoming Six Nations over here.

“What we like about him is that he’s an out-and-out ball carrier, which is something we felt like we didn’t have this year in the Senior Academy. He’s a big, powerful lad but quick as well, so he’s a very effective ball carrier.

“He’s got some things to learn around his transition to the back row, but the skills he’s picked up playing previously in the centres and on the wing for his school and Academy sides will be great assets for him to have.”

Henry Pollock, Archie McParland, Ewan Baker, Toby Cousins and Will Glister were also presented to the cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens crowd on the pitch before Friday’s Gallagher Premiership victory over Bath Rugby, having signed their first professional contracts earlier that evening.

All six players have represented England at Under-18s level, and will join up with Saints’ senior squad on a full-time basis from July 1.

Pollock, McParland, Baker, and Cousins played starring roles for Saints’ Under-18s side this term as Northampton reached the Final of the Premiership Rugby Academy League for the second successive season, while Glister and Logan join the Club from the RFU’s Midlands Central Academy (formerly Wasps’ set-up).

Five players Steve Borthwick should DROP – and who should play against Ireland

#1. Jack van Poortvliet

Evening Standard 4/10: “Failed to take control at the base of the ruck in a messy performance.”

Telegraph 3/10: “His job was to quicken the tempo but instead presided over a slow ruck and shanked a horrible box kick. Was hauled off for Mitchell minutes into the second half.”

Rugby Pass 4/10: “Very much a case of master and the apprentice, the rookie England scrum-half getting schooled by his oppsite number Dupont. Gone on 46 and not before time.”

Planet Rugby 3/10: “He was taken off just six minutes after half-time, and Borthwick would not have been blamed for doing it before then. The French pack put him under immense pressure, but he also made a few daft decisions on attack and made silly errors.”

Mail Online 3/10: “Too ponderous from base and replaced early in second half.”

Replacement: Alex Mitchell
