Harlequins to confirm new boss, Steve Diamond misses out

Harlequins have acted fast to fill the void left by Danny Wilson’s sudden departure, with Telegraph Sport reporting that Toby Booth will return to The Stoop on a short-term deal.

Quins were left stunned last week when Wilson was whisked away by Wales to become their new defence coach — just 24 hours before their Premiership Rugby Cup opener against Newcastle Red Bulls.

Now, Booth has been drafted in to steady the ship. The 55-year-old is one of English rugby’s most seasoned operators, with a career spanning nearly two decades at the top level.

Booth first made his name at London Irish, where he transformed the Exiles into one of the Premiership’s most exciting outfits, guiding them to the 2009 final. Known for giving youngsters their shot, he helped launch the careers of stars such as Alex Corbisiero, Anthony Watson and Jonathan Joseph.

After spells as an assistant at Bath and Harlequins, Booth crossed the Severn Bridge in 2020 to take over the struggling Ospreys. He turned them into the most competitive Welsh region, masterminding a famous Champions Cup win over Montpellier and leading them into the 2024 URC play-offs — the first Welsh side to do so in six years.

Though results dipped last season and he stepped down in December, Booth’s reputation as a builder of tough, forward-dominated teams remains intact. A former flanker in his playing days, he’s known for his straight-talking approach, relentless standards and knack for squeezing every drop of effort out of his squads.

He’ll now link up with Quins’ existing coaching team — Jason Gilmore (defence), Nick Evans (attack), Adam Jones (scrum) and Matt Ferguson (transition) — and is expected to add an edge of steel to a side often accused of flair without enough bite. Senior players have already been briefed on his arrival, though his exact job title is yet to be pinned down.

According to Telegraph Sport, Booth’s deal will run until the end of the season while Quins continue their search for a permanent successor to Wilson, with stronger candidates expected to emerge as other contracts wind down.
