Harlequins Women ran out a resounding victory over Wasps Women last weekend, and marked their third annual ‘Game Changer’ event with a 80-7 victory. This landslide victory also took place on Harlequins Women’s official Pride fixture, which took place in support of the LGBTQ+ community, and celebrates the inclusivity of rugby.
The stars of England’s Red Roses were out in full force at Twickenham Stoop, as Ellie Kildunne scored four tries for Harlequins in the one-sided victory. Poppy Cleall, Abby Dow and two for Emily Scott added to the England-capped try-scorers. England Sevens star Lauren Torley also grabbed a brace, as the one sided traffic was maintained from start to finish at the Stoop.
Additional tries came from Katy Mew, Australian international Kaitlan Leaney and South African star Babalaw Latsha. England’s Lagi Tuima was ever-impressive from the kicking tee, as she slotted 10 out of 12 conversions. Wasps sole score came from prop Andrea Stock, and the successful conversion from Hannah Edwards were purely consolatory.
Bryony Cleall discussed the importance of the LGBTQ+ Pride fixture, and how it can positively impact the inclusivity of the game.
“We’re here to change the game. We’re here to change the face of women’s rugby. We’ve fought stereotypes to create an inclusive environment where people can come and support us and ultimately be entertained. Holding a pride match reinforces that everyone is not only welcome but celebrated too, both on and off the pitch.”
When asked about the importance of the Game Changer, Australia’s Wallaroos star Emily Chancellor said to the Harlequins Women’s Media:
“The Game Changer fixture is so important for women’s rugby because it shows how much support there is not only for the sport but the women’s game in particular. Pairing up with the pride fixture is vital because it shows how inclusive rugby truly is. This sport is for everyone, and to be able to celebrate it with Pride flags flying at The Stoop made for a really special day – it was a celebration for everyone.”
South African international Babalwa Latsha praised the fans who generated an exciting atmosphere at the Twickenham Stoop. The Springbok Women’s star hopes to have inspired some of the young rugby players in the stadium.
“It’s so great to play in front of an electrifying crowd and see people of all ages come out to celebrate women’s rugby at the Game Changer. It was great to meet the young fans and see the positive impact women’s rugby has had on them. Hopefully we have been able to inspire them to follow their dreams – maybe one day they will play for Harlequins too!”
