It has been confirmed that the 78-cap international has signed a two-year deal with French Pro D2 club Soyaux Angoulême XV Charente.

Angoulême finished 12th out of 16 clubs in the Pro D2, and May’s arrival is expected to significantly boost their chances of reaching the play-offs next season.

The 34-year-old leaves the Premiership after playing for both Gloucester and Leicester Tigers, including two stints with Gloucester, since his debut in 2009.

He is the sixth-highest try scorer in Premiership history with 76 touchdowns.

Career after rugby:

May, who has ventured into podcasting, discussed his exploration of post-playing opportunities, including the potential of joining the fire service with the RAF.

He said: “I am still hoping to play for the next couple of years or year, I am not quite ready to stop playing yet, but the RAF could help me come in during the off-season.

“It would help me get a bit of a foot up while I am still playing.”
