“Late Title Upset” Jersey Reds Head for First Championship Triumph After Victory Over Ealing Trailfinders

Jersey Reds look to have secured a last-ditch push for the RFU Championship title, after a thrilling victory over Ealing Trailfinders. They have leap-frogged the dominant league leaders, and have one hand on the trophy with just one game left to go.

Jersey Reds have never won the RFU Championship, and overtake Ealing who have been top of the division for the majority of the season. It was a dramatic encounter at the Stade, for an eventual 19-13 Jersey win.

Tries for Jersey’s Alex McHenry and Ealing’s Rob Farrar saw Ealing lead 10-7, before Sam Grahamslaw put Reds 12-10 up ahead of the half-time break. Steven Shingler’s penalty put Ealing a point ahead with 12 minutes to go, but Will Brown took advantage of an Ealing error soon after to score a memorable try for the Reds.

Reds’ Russell Bennett missed a late penalty, which would have taken the losing bonus point away from Ealing. Jersey are now two points clear at the top of the RFU Championship, with a win over Ampthill securing the league title next weekend.

Jersey Reds Director of Rugby Harvey Biljon spoke to BBC Radio Jersey after the match.

“What an unbelievable effort for the squad and all the backroom staff all season. But this is underpinned by one more week. We’ve got some hard work to do this week. Let’s enjoy today’s occasion, but one more week, that’s the key message straight away.

“The amount of hard work and sacrifice that’s been put in by this group throughout the campaign, the way we’ve rotated the squad, means everyone’s ready to go out there and perform. They’re not going to give this opportunity up.”

This is a tough blow for the Trailfinders, after it was announced that if they were to win this years RFU Championship, they are ineligible for a spot in the Gallagher Premiership following a facility inspection from the RFU. Now the Londoners may have had a consolation Championship title snatched from their grasp, with it all to play for on the final day of the season.

When the Reds take on Ampthill, Ealing Trailfinders have the challenging trip to Castle Park, for a clash with Doncaster Knights.
