The latest Welsh international to depart the country has been confirmed, as fly half Rhys Patchell has agreed a move to the Highlanders. Patchell joins the New Zealand Super Rugby side following his release from the Scarlets earlier this Summer.
The Welshman joins the Highlanders alongside fellow new arrival Timoci Tavatavanawai from Super Rugby opponents Moana Pasifika.
Patchell was involved in the 2023 Six Nations, making one appearance throughout the competition. The 30-year-old came off the bench for a 24 minute spell at Murrayfield, as Wales suffered a 35-7 landslide defeat to Scotland. However, the former Scarlets man was not named in Warren Gatland’s Wales squad, as preparations continue for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Patchell becomes the latest international departure from Wales regional rugby. He follows on from the likes of Alun Wyn Jones (Toulon), Will Rowlands (Racing 92) Cory Hill (Secom Rugguts) Rhys Webb (Biarritz), Joe Hawkins (Exeter Chiefs) and Liam Williams (Kubota Spears) to pursue a club career outside the country.
Rhys Patchell recently starred for the World XV, in a thrilling 48-42 exhibition match, which saw the invitational side defeated by the Barbarians at Twickenham Stadium.
“I’m delighted to be joining the Highlanders for the upcoming Super Rugby season,” Patchell said (via BBC Sport)
“Having watched Super Rugby from afar, I’m excited for the 2024 season to begin. I look forward to getting started and contributing as much as I can both on and off the field.”
Highlanders head coach, Clarke Dermody, said it was “fantastic news” Patchell had signed.
“I like his attacking mindset and skillset, which should align well with the way we want to play the game,” Dermody said.
“He defends well, has a sound kicking game and his ability to cover full-back will be a real asset to us during the season.”
