LIST: Five bizarre, brilliant and hilarious Joe Marler stories

The prop compared himself to an "Irish horse" in an interview with his club's media channel in November 2019.

Marler describes the hurt he felt after the recent defeat and said the team has to "get back on the horse".

Marler takes the classic cliche answer and embarks on a tale about a horse who wants to "give a better performance" this weekend against Bath.

He said: "I wasn't hurting as much as the lads who were out there but I definitely felt it and I know how hard the boys have taken that.

"They'll be disappointed with the account that we put out but we have got another week to get back on the horse and take that horse to the water and you can ask that horse and say, 'Hey, horsey, do you want to have a drink or do you want to swim?'

"And it's up to that horse to then realise what he wants to do in his life.

"And that horse, at the moment, wants to go out on Saturday.

"He wants to clippidy-clop all the way to The Stoop and he wants to say 'hello' to those fans.

"And he goes: 'I'm sorry about the result last week, but I'm going to give a better performance here at home against Bath.'"

One of the hands down best stories from his book comes from a wet and windy away game in Biarritz where Marler thought he might ‘freeze to death in a cloud of garlic breath and BO.’

A desperate idea saw the prop piss himself, and after being sussed out by teammate Kohn, the lock joined him, ‘piising their pants in unison in an effort to survive.’

The two then promised to never speak about the incident, which Marler apologies for breaking in his book by simply saying ‘sorry mate’.

Joe Marler made his debut early on the tour in 2012 - cracking out 'Someone like You' by Adele - but May was left waiting. On one of the long bus journeys, the prop suggested to May that the time was right for him to show off his singing talents.

"I said to him. 'Jonny, we've got a really long trip. It'd be good for you, for morale, if you got up and did Ice Ice Baby'. Because he knows it word for word. It'd be good for morale, I said.

"He was like, 'But I haven't got a cap, Joe. I haven't been capped'.

"I said, 'They won't care, mate. You f***ing get up there. It's entertaining the crowd. You know it word for word'.

"'I'm not sure Joe'.

"'F***ing do it, mate. Boys will love you. You know it word for word. You came on tour late; it's a great way for the lads to get to know you'."

So, up gets May and he began to start beat-boxing and singing the Vanilla Ice rap classic.

The reaction he received was instant... and brutal. Marler continues:

"He starts going, and I go, 'F***ing hell, I've made him do it. I've actually made him do it'.

"'Ice Ice...' he begins. From the back [you hear], 'SIT DOWN! F***ING SIT DOWN!' All I'm hearing from Haskell, Toby Flood, all the other boys is, 'SIT DOWN! WHERE'S YOUR F***ING CAP? YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CAP! SIT DOWN NOW. YOU'RE NOT WELCOME HERE. SIT DOWN, YOU F***ING PR**K!!' 

Marler encouraged May to keep going and, in fairness to him, he kept rapping through a torrent of a bus.

When it was over, he sat down and dropped his head in his hands. To Marler, and Haskell, the best was yet to come.

"Jonny eventually looks up. 'You said it would be good to get up!'"

This isn’t necessarily a negative story about the speedster, but having the fact you take part in WWE like wrestling in your underpants published to the masses probably isn’t ideal

Marler tells a wonderful story in his autobiography of how their epic one-on-one match from behind closed doors was discovered by 2003 World Cup winner and then England coach Mike Catt in 2013.

This resulted in the pair having to wrestle in front of their teammates with May coming out on top after Marler was forced to start on his knees due to his weight advantage.

Marler went onto say: “It was always Jonny who usually tapped out. He was incredibly fit and strong and his wrestling skills were awesome, but being the much chunkier bloke I beat im every time.”

A change of pace with this story. Legendary Wales prop Adam Jones was in the midst of pre-season in San Francisco when news broke of his mother’s sudden death in August 2016.

une Jones, 65, suffered fatal injuries as a result of a tragic accident and the 35-year-old recalls the moment he the news was broken to him by his wife.

“I was enjoying my pre-season, I got through the initial couple of weeks,” revealed Jones.

“The morning I found out — and I know he hasn’t got the best reputation in Wales — I was sharing with Joe Marler and if he hadn’t been there, I would have been in a heck of a mess. I would have really struggled,”.

“He was up with me at 4am sorting stuff out, getting me whatever I needed.

“He took me to get breakfast. Joe was brilliant with me that morning.”
