LIST: Four serious contenders to replace Alun Wyn Jones

Warren Gatland has revealed the “very best case scenario” is that four-time Lion Alun Wyn Jones would be fit for the first Test against the Springboks on 24 July.

“He’s going to be gutted,” he added.

“I’ve spoken to the physios, they’ve spoken to Alun Wyn, he understands the very best scenario is he may get back for the Tests.

“We need to call someone and get them [Covid-19] tested and hopefully get them on the flight tomorrow.

“We’re discussing names with the other coaches.”

Below, we look at four players who could potentially replace the injured captain

Alun Wyn Jones replacement:

#1. Jonny Gray (Scotland)

  • Age 27
  • Caps 66

Against England in February he outplayed both Maro Itoje and Jonny Hill, who have made the Lions squad. It seemed Gray would be part of Gatland’s group himself, but it hasn’t happened. He’d have a point to prove here.
