However, some players have never really got the credit that they probably deserved, with others often grabbing the spotlight.

1. Ed Slater (Leicester & Gloucester)

He was desperately unlucky not to win a full cap for England during a successful period at Welford Road, where he was called up five times. When Tigers let him go to Gloucester in order to sign Jonny May, it was actually the Cherry & Whites who got the better of the deal. He brought real experience and an abrasive edge up front to the Gloucester pack in his first season, making 26 appearances and skippering the side on a number of occasions. Slater has continued that contribution ever since.
