The Red Roses have cleared up the confusion, around who scored England’s fourth try in their 38-19 win over France on Saturday. The question marks were raised after the televised broadcast and the live stadium announcement awarded the try to two different Red Roses stars, with Marlie Packer and Morwenna Talling both getting the plaudits for the pick and drive score from close range.
The speaker system home of Gloucester Rugby awarded the try to England skipper Packer, whilst the TV coverage on BBC One gave the try to Red Roses lock Talling. The confusion led to the in-person reporters recording the score as Packer’s second of the match, whilst the remote coverage handed the try to Talling.
The dust has been cleared, and the RFU have confirmed that the 43rd minute try was in fact scored by Marlie Packer.
An official statement from the Red Roses media department added the clarity, with the score seemingly shared between the two forwards following the weekend’s win. “For the record books, the Red Roses’ try scorers against France yesterday (Saturday 7 September) were: Marlie Packer (2) Jess Breach (2) Helena Rowland Lucy Packer. TV awarded a try to Morwenna Talling in the second half but it was Marlie Packer’s second of the match.”
With the confusion cleared up after last weekend’s triumph over France, the Red Roses can now turn their full attention to the task at hand. England take on the Black Ferns of New Zealand this Saturday at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium, with the reigning World Champions set to lay down the marker against the number one ranked women’s team in the world, the Red Roses.
This fixture doubles up as the last pre-tournament Test match, before the Red Roses jet out to Canada for the upcoming WXV1 competition.
