New candidate emerges as favourite for Leicester job

Ex-head coach Matt O’Connor has emerged as the front-runner to replace Richard Cockerill as Director of Rugby at Leicester Tigers.

The Leicester Mercury, renowned for their fantastic coverage of Tigers, have revealed that the popular ex-coach is being lined up for a potential return to Welford Road.

O’Connor began his coaching career at Tigers in 2009 as a backs coach and was part of the coaching team that won the Premiership in 2010 and 2013.

Since then he has held positions at Irish province Leinster where he won the Pro12 in 2013–14, and was co-head coach of the Queensland Reds alongside Nick Stiles during the 2016 Super Rugby season.

Tigers discussed other people for the role vacated by Richard Cockerill in January, such as former captain Martin Johnson.

However, current head coach Aaron Mauger is in a good position to further his cause if Tigers finish the season strongly.
