How Newcastle Red Bulls will line-up next season after wave of new signings

Here, we look at how the current squad is taking shape ahead of next season, what still needs work, and whether the rebuild can deliver immediately results.

A major signing from Exeter, Hodge returns to the north east after five years away and looks a genuine statement of intent. Now 25, he has developed into one of the Prem’s most reliable fullbacks. Safe under the high ball, composed in attack and defensively sound, he appears a clear first-choice option for next season.

Back in union after his spell with Wigan, Wade adds star power and proven finishing quality. At 34, his pace may have dulled slightly, but his instinct for the try line remains elite. With Chris Ashton’s record within reach, Wade will be motivated and should be a key figure on the wing if he stays fit.

Currently Newcastle’s leading option at outside centre, Hearle offers versatility and solid Prem-level output. However, he may face competition or replacement as recruitment continues. More likely a squad player than a nailed-on starter, though his ability to cover wing makes him a useful asset.

The former Ireland international brings experience and professionalism, but at this stage of his career may be better suited to a rotation role. While not the long-term answer in midfield, his pedigree and composure make him a dependable option in a Prem squad.

One of the brighter performers in a struggling side, Obatoyinbo has shown enough attacking threat to suggest he could thrive with stronger players around him. A capable Prem winger, though not necessarily untouchable as recruitment continues.

Fresh from signing a long-term extension, Connon looks well placed to start at fly-half. With limited options on the market and the club clearly backing him, the Carlisle-born playmaker should continue to marshal the attack. His Ireland U20 background hints at untapped potential.

One of the headline additions. If Quirke stays fit, Newcastle will have one of the Prem’s most dynamic scrum-halves. His speed, game control and international pedigree instantly raise the ceiling of the side and make him a cornerstone of the rebuild.

A dependable scrummager who offers stability on the loosehead side. While he may not represent Newcastle’s long-term ambitions in the front row, he is serviceable at Prem level and unlikely to be an urgent replacement.

The club captain remains a key figure after signing a short extension. With a remarkable try record for a hooker, McGuigan provides leadership, experience and reliability. He may not be a long-term solution, but he will continue to play a central role next season.

An experienced international prop arriving from Northampton, Millar Mills brings proven Prem and European pedigree. His scrummaging and know-how should stabilise the tighthead position and make him an important short-term starter in Newcastle’s pack.

A versatile forward capable of playing in the second row or back row, Tuima adds athleticism and line-breaking ability. Still only 25 and with strong Prem experience at Exeter, he looks a smart, high-upside signing who could become a fixture in the pack.

The Argentine lock arrives after Super Rugby with Western Force and already has Prem experience with Exeter. Physical, mobile and internationally capped, Molina gives Newcastle a hardened presence in the engine room and should be a strong contender for a starting role.

Not yet officially confirmed, but likely to arrive from Perpignan, Hicks has been one of the Top 14 side’s standout performers. A hard-working, consistent back-rower, he would add steel and reliability to a Newcastle pack that badly needs both.

Arguably the most eye-catching signing of the rebuild. A former New Zealand U20 captain and three-time Super Rugby champion with the Crusaders, Christie brings elite pedigree and relentless work rate. Although ineligible for the All Blacks while in England, he could become one of the Prem’s premier opensides.

A marquee acquisition. The Blues number eight is a powerful ball carrier with 14 All Blacks caps and huge athletic upside. At 27, he should be entering his prime, and with potential England eligibility, he could be the focal point of Newcastle’s pack and one of the standout forwards in the league.
