Statement: Newcastle Red Bulls head coach confirms exits with immediate effect

Alan Dickens will step away from Newcastle Red Bulls at the end of the 2025–26 season.

The 50-year-old has been in charge on an interim basis since October after replacing Steve Diamond, but weeks of speculation about his future have now been put to bed.

Dickens’ impending exit comes with Scotland boss Gregor Townsend heavily linked with the Kingston Park role following this year’s World Cup.

Originally brought in during 2024 as attack and defence coach, Dickens has overseen five wins from 17 matches as interim head coach. Newcastle currently prop up the Premiership table, managing just one victory in their last 10 games.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the Red Bulls’ Premiership Rugby Cup clash with Leicester Tigers at Welford Road, Dickens confirmed he will not be in the job next season.

“I’m not there next season, but I wish the club well with whoever comes in – and I sincerely mean that,” he said.

“There’s a job to finish here and I want to be professional about it.

“It was an honour to be asked to take on the interim role. I’ve enjoyed the people, I’ve enjoyed the place, and I wish the club nothing but the best going forward.

“As for the players, I want the best for all of them – whether they’re staying or moving on – and I hope they find opportunities to continue their professional careers.”
