Nigel Owens reveals little known law that Meant England try couldn’t be disallowed

Video from the match has revealed a pivotal moment leading up to England’s final try, showcasing wing Tommy Freeman carrying the ball into touch just before Ben Earl scored.

This action, if noticed, would have nullified the try. Nigel Owens has shed light on why the TMO (Television Match Official) was unable to intervene, leaving Irish fans with a sense of heartbreak.

Owens said: “Is it (Freeman’s foot) in touch, yes it is, the footage shows that it is so we can’t deny that. Look at the position of the touch judge here there is no other real position that he can be in.

“So it’s very very difficult to see with bodies in front of you whether that foot is in touch or not.

“We then have three phases before the try is scored! This is the key part here. You can only go back to refer to the TMO if that foot was in touch if it was within two phases of a try being scored.

“Because it was within three phases its gone over the two, its now outside of protocol which means the TMO cannot come in and input to the assistant referee and referee that the foot was in touch.”

How Ireland Might Secure the Championship Despite a Loss

Even if Ireland falls to Scotland, there’s still a path to the Championship. If they manage to secure a losing bonus point along with a try bonus point, they’ll reach 18 points, making it impossible for any other team to surpass them.

Alternatively, if Ireland loses to Scotland but England fails to secure a win against France, Ireland would be on at least 16 points, with England only able to reach 14 points with a draw.

Even with just one bonus point from their match against Scotland and England winning in France without a bonus point, Ireland would still edge ahead with 17 points, leaving England on 16. This scenario would mark a historic first for a team not winning the most games in the Six Nations yet clinching the championship.
