In a heartfelt announcement, Dragons RFC stalwart Ollie Griffiths has officially retired from professional rugby with immediate effect due to medical reasons. The 29-year-old, who has been a cornerstone of the Dragons’ pack for over a decade, leaves the game after making 105 appearances and scoring six tries for the Men of Gwent.
Griffiths’ career faced an abrupt conclusion after he was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) in early 2024. Although his treatment has progressed well, complications arising from the illness have caused nerve issues, making it impossible for him to continue playing. Despite the circumstances, Griffiths remains optimistic and philosophical about his journey.
Born in Newbridge, Griffiths rose through the Dragons’ academy, eventually becoming the club’s 36th centurion when he played his 100th game against Edinburgh in October 2023. His final appearance came against the Sharks in January 2024. Reflecting on his career, Griffiths expressed gratitude: “Playing for Dragons RFC for over a decade and representing Wales has been the greatest honour of my career. The highlight will always be standing on the field at the Principality Stadium, singing the anthem, and seeing my family in the stands.”
Known for his tireless work rate, ferocious tackling, and leadership, Griffiths was a fan favorite at Rodney Parade.
