ON THIS DAY: Toulouse win the first Heineken Cup
On this day 20 year’s ago Toulouse overcame Cardiff 21-18 after a period of extra time.
The tournament coincided with the announcement of professionalism, with a hastily arranged competition being launched in the summer of 1995, which would involve 12 teams from Ireland, France, Wales, Italy and Romania to decide who would be the first Champions of Europe.
England and Scotland had decided to give the tournament a miss, but after seeing the excitement and quality of rugby would join the tournament for the following season.
The annual competition, now known as the Champions Cup, is one of the most watched, most enjoyed club competitions in world rugby now with a lot of the games finest players on display.
