Ospreys flanker Sam Underhill won’t tour with England

  • Ospreys open-side Sam Underhill will not tour Australia with England this summer
  • Eddie Jones is hoping to have him available for the Autumn internationals
  • The 19-year-old has impressed since making his debut for the Welsh side back in September
Ospreys flanker Sam Underhill will not tour with England this summer revealed head coach Eddie Jones.

The 19-year-old openside has had an outstanding debut season on the senior scene, performing well enough to earn Champions Cup selection and going on to make 16 appearances all told for the Welsh region.

Despite pledging his allegiance to England, Underhill wants to stay with Ospreys and Rugby Football Union rules currently state Jones cannot select players based outside England.

“Hopefully by November he’s going to be eligible for selection,” admitted Jones.

“I had a good chat with him last week and we decided the best thing for him is to have a good pre-season.

“He’s a young guy, he’s had a fair few injuries this season.”

Underhill’s unavailability also means he will miss England Saxons’ tour of South Africa in June.
