“Past it” – Four most overpaid players in the Gallagher Premiership this season

With Premiership clubs struggling to survive, they can no longer afford to have highly paid players earning huge wages and offering little in return.

Premiership clubs are not in high demand at present due to their lack of profitability and the significant uncertainty surrounding them.

However, it is not just London Irish and Newcastle that have cause for concern, as clubs without ownership of their own grounds are more vulnerable to difficulties than others.

Despite their success on the pitch this season, Sale reported losses of several million in their latest accounts and may be feeling the pressure. Meanwhile, Exeter appears to be downsizing, and even Leicester required a financial boost a few months back.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at four of the most overpaid players in the Gallagher Premiership.

#4. Jonny May (Gloucester) – Reportedly £275,000 per season

Despite being England’s second-highest try-scorer of all time, May appears to be declining in quality for the Cherry & Whites.

He has had a forgettable season, scoring only three tries in 16 games for Gloucester, equating to one try every 336 minutes.

His struggles are further highlighted by sharing the field with speedy and in-form players like Louis Rees-Zammit and Ollie Thorley.
