Philippe Saint-Andre could make a sensational return to Gloucester Rugby for a second spell in charge, according to the French press.

Sport newspaper L’Equipe has reported that Saint-Andre could come back for a second spell as coach if Mohed Altrad becomes majority shareholder of the Cherry and Whites.

It is not clear, however if Altrad can become the owner of another club in Europe, knowing that the two entities could compete in the Champions Cup, for example.

Altrad’s hopes of seizing a 55 per cent share in Gloucester is likely to depend on whether he is given consent by the English Rugby Union (RFU) and European Professional Club Rugby (EPRC).

Saint-Andre, who coached France at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, led Gloucester to two third-place finishes in the Premiership and the Heineken Cup semi-final after a famous quarter-final win over Cardiff during his reign between 1998 and 2002.

He signed several French players during his time at Kingsholm, including hooker Olivier Azam, who could join the Frenchmans coaching staff should he return to the Midlands.
