“Porky teenager” – England star reveals he supported Ireland as youngster before ‘seeing sense’

A prominent England rugby star boasting nearly 100 international appearances has disclosed his past allegiance to Ireland! Can you guess who this player might be?

Writing in the Mail Online, Joe Marler wrote: “Not many people know this but I grew up supporting Ireland. I loved guys like Marcus Horan, Jerry Flannery, John Hayes and Paul O’Connell.

“My mate, Matt, reminded me of it the other day when he sent a photograph of me wearing a green jersey as a porky teenager.

“I have some Irish blood on my mum’s side of the family and I was a bit of a non-conformist. Even though I grew up here, I didn’t want to be like everyone else by supporting England.

“It came to a head when I was 13 and giving it the biggun to everyone cheering on England when they were on TV in the club-house.

“Let’s just say one of the first team players had a stern word with me in the toilets and I’ve supported England ever since.”

England team news:

Sources reveal that England coach Steve Borthwick is gearing up to include the recovered scrumhalf Alex Mitchell and George Martin in the lineup for the tough Six Nations showdown.

Additionally, Marcus Smith is slated for a return to the matchday 23 as a substitute, while George Ford retains his spot at fly-half.

At 21, Feyi-Waboso has made a splash in his two appearances off the bench and is now in contention to start on the left wing.

Unless there’s a last-minute change, Elliot Daly looks set to make way for Feyi-Waboso, who was the focus of a fierce England-Wales recruitment battle before the Six Nations.

The Exeter winger missed out on last week’s York training camp due to a medical exam but earned plaudits for his try-scoring performance against Scotland, singled out by coach Gregor Townsend.

Feyi-Waboso joined Exeter following Wasps’ administration turmoil, and his regular play for the Chiefs this season follows a stint on loan at Taunton.
