As a player, Mannix has a 12-year career, during which he represented Wellington’s team of the National Provincial Championship between 1990 and 1995, and the historic Hurricanes (Super Rugby team) in 1996. Until 2002, he pursued a career in the Premiership, where he played for Sale and Gloucester.

After his playing career, Mannix became a coach, accumulating so far numerous experiences at the highest level in the Northern Hemisphere.

The new national coach was present in the French championships for several seasons, at the service of clubs such as US Romans, Racing 92, Section Paloise or Bassin Arcachon. In addition, he was also deputy coach at Munster Rugby, director of the Singapore national teams and coach of Biarritz Olympique.

Carlos Amado da Silva, President of the Portuguese Rugby Federation. said: “Simon is a very experienced coach. I am convinced that the style of play he implemented in his previous teams is the most suitable for our national team.

“In addition, he has a strong connection with France, both with the players and with the clubs, which makes it the ideal profile we needed. I am completely confident that you will succeed with the Wolves.”

His first game in charge is set to be a blockbuster test against South Africa.

  • Saturday, 6 July: SA vs. Ireland (Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria)
