Courtney Lawes questions RFU ruling after move back to England

, Lawes questioned the restriction that prevents overseas-based players from being selected, highlighting the calibre of talent currently playing abroad, particularly in France, that is unavailable for England selection.

The 37-year-old second row enjoyed a distinguished 14-year international career, claiming three Six Nations titles and featuring in the 2019 World Cup final, before stepping away from international rugby after the 2023 tournament.

At club level, he spent the majority of his career with Northampton Saints, winning two Premiership titles, before moving to French side Brive in 2024.

England endured a difficult Six Nations campaign this year, finishing fifth with just one win from five matches, ending below Italy.

The result was particularly disappointing given they entered the tournament on an 11-game winning streak and were widely considered title contenders.

Speaking to Sky Sports News

"I just don't understand why you'd restrict your options. You look at the players you've got out here with the Willis brothers next season, Zach Mercer, Joe Marchant that was here, [Henry] Arundell and people like that were here.

"No other country does that, especially when France is not far, so I don't really understand it. I understand it in a way, but I do think it's detrimental at this point and should be revisited."

The rule, introduced in 2011, aims to safeguard the standard of the English league by ensuring top English players compete within it, while also giving the RFU greater control and improved access to current and prospective England players.

Explaining his decision to join Sale, Lawes said family ties played a key role, with his partner’s relatives based near Manchester and supporting the club.

"There was only a couple of clubs in the UK that I would have gone back to.

"Obviously Saints being the main one, and Sale being second because my missus' family are actually from near Manchester, a lot of her family support Sale so it was somewhat keeping it at home for me.

"We're going to be living on the farm with the in-laws, so that will be an interesting year."

Now back in England, Lawes is once again eligible for international selection and has confirmed he is open to a return, though he remains cautious about expectations.

"I am officially coming out of international retirement. That doesn't mean that I'll be playing for England again, that remains to be seen.

"But, it's always a process for me, if I can get back and perform for Sale, I'll give myself an opportunity to potentially play for England.

"I've got no expectation to play for England, if Steve thinks I can add to the squad then I'll be more than happy to try and do that."
