England flanker signs one-year contract extension in New Zealand

The new deal ensures Shields will return for his 11th season with the Wellington-based side, continuing a remarkable journey that began with his debut back in 2012. Now 34, the experienced loose forward remains a central figure at the club during his second stint, bringing leadership and continuity to the squad.

Shields sits fourth on the Hurricanes’ all-time appearances list with 133 caps, underlining his longevity and importance to the franchise across more than a decade.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Shields expressed both gratitude and excitement about extending his time at the club.

“I’m super excited to be staying with the Canes for another year, and extremely grateful to the club for the opportunity,” he said.

“I love where the club is at, both on and off the field, with the players and management – we are building something very special.

“I’m also excited about what’s happening off the field and the alignment across the entire club, as well as the positive direction we’re heading in to grow our game within the community and be frontrunners in innovation within Super Rugby.

“It’s awesome to be supported by such an amazing organisation. This is home for me and my beautiful family, and without the support of them, I couldn’t do what I do.”

With Shields’ extension secured, the Hurricanes retain a hugely influential presence heading into next season, as they continue to build both on-field performance and off-field momentum.
