Former South Africa star Luqobo Makwedini dies aged 20

The 20-year-old front-rower became unwell at the end of Friday morning's session at Stade de la Gayonne before collapsing. Emergency services rushed him to hospital, but he sadly passed away a few hours later. French reports state Makwedini is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest, although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

Makwedini, who represented South Africa at Under-18 level, joined Béziers' academy ahead of the 2025/26 season after impressing at Wynberg Boys' High School in Cape Town.

The tighthead prop had spent last season developing in the club's academy and was widely expected to be promoted into the senior squad for the 2026/27 campaign. Standing at 1.76m and weighing 119kg, he was regarded as one of Béziers' brightest young prospects despite not yet making his professional debut.

In a statement released on Friday evening, Béziers paid tribute to the popular youngster, writing: "It is with immense sadness and deep emotion that we announce the tragic passing of our young player Luqobo (Bibo) Makwedini. The entire red and blue family is united in grief and extends its sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones and teammates."

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through both French and South African rugby, with tributes pouring in across social media from players, supporters and clubs.
