Gordano Ladies rugby star Lee Whonic is heading to Ukraine. The hooker played for her team in a top of the table clash over the weekend prior to setting off on her journey today
The club, who had a huge collection for their departing player are still accepting donations, and gave her an almighty send off at the weekend.
Whonic, who currently lives just outside of Bristol, will be working with an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) called
UkraineNow to give aid to fleeing civilians..
They are a global decentralized effort to help Ukrainians and other nations deal with the humanitarian crisis and consequences of a brutal invasion by the Russian Federation.
"We are leaving Portishead to collect the aid supplies collected by the group Ukrainians in Bristol at noon tomorrow and we are taking the train from Folkstone later that evening," revealed Whonic.
"It more than a days drive across Europe to Poland and we are going to be working at one of the busiest crossings.
"My partner retired from 25 years in the British Army so I trust that between my brain and his experience we can try our best to make a difference."
The 31-year-old added: "I know people are frustrated and deeply saddened by global events. We've had decades of turmoil that wears the down the energies of the international community.
"But, I also believe at my core that we can each do something that helps to improve the lives of those around us. So, to those at home feeling overwhelmed by the news and wondering how they can help: start by trying to understand those around you who have different lived experiences and listen with compassion. From a material stand point, identity legitimate organisations who need specific aid, whether that be funding or supplies and try to engage on a needs based level."
