The visitors surged away in the final quarter, prompting audible boos from the home crowd as frustration spilled over. Large sections of supporters headed for the exits before the final whistle, while others vented their anger online.

Former Quins prop Joe Marler, in attendance to support Joe Launchbury on his final home appearance, didn’t hold back in his reaction.

Posting on social media, he wrote: “1st time back at the Stoop since retiring. Feel for the fans. Shame. Think some of the upper hierarchy need to do the honourable thing this summer.”

One season ticket holder, Daniel Carr, replied by questioning the club’s direction, highlighting a prolonged coaching search that resulted in Jason Gilmore remaining in charge, along with concerns over performance director Robbie Deans’ remote involvement.

Marler’s response was blunt and to the point: “Ridiculous.”
