Lions squad reveal incoming: Eight big names set to miss out

Andy Farrell will name his 37-man British & Irish Lions squad next Thursday – and there are set to be some major omissions.

Wales, currently enduring a 17-Test losing streak, are expected to have their lowest representation since the 1993 tour of New Zealand, where only five players were selected. It's a stark contrast to recent tours, where Welsh players made up a large portion of the squad.

Wales Online have predicted next week’s squad – and highlighted several headline names who are likely to miss out. Here are seven players set to be overlooked.

Darcy Graham (Scotland)

Injuries have derailed Graham's chances of making the plane, despite his electric pace and finishing ability. The Scotland winger hasn't had the run of games needed to cement his place and looks set to be overlooked in favour of more consistent performers.

Fin Smith (England)

Despite a breakthrough season at Northampton Saints and talk of him being England’s long-term fly-half, Fin Smith is expected to miss out. With fierce competition at 10, his Lions dream may have to wait until 2029.

Marcus Smith (England)

The Harlequins star has found himself slipping down the pecking order for both England and the Lions. While his flair is undeniable, questions remain about his game management at the highest level – and Farrell may favour more pragmatic options.

Ben White (Scotland)

A solid Six Nations wasn't enough for the Toulon scrum-half to force his way into Lions contention. With plenty of depth at 9, White appears to be just outside the selection bubble for this tour.

Jamie George (England)

A shock omission if it comes to pass. England's World Cup hooker and current captain might lose out to younger options, especially if Farrell opts for a more future-facing squad. His form this season hasn’t quite hit previous heights.

Pierre Schoemann (Scotland)

A powerhouse for Edinburgh, Schoemann has put in some strong performances for Scotland, but competition at loosehead prop is fierce. With the likes of Andrew Porter and Ellis Genge likely ahead of him, he may narrowly miss out.

Courtney Lawes (England)

One of England’s most experienced and respected players, Lawes is expected to be left out due to his age and possible shift in focus to newer talent. If true, it would be a significant call – and possibly the end of his Lions journey.

Jack Willis (England)

Now playing in France with Toulouse, Willis is unavailable for England selection under RFU rules – and that could impact his Lions chances. Despite being one of the top opensides in Europe, his lack of international minutes may count against him.

Jim Telfer names 12 England stars in Lions squad – Marcus Smith misses out

The former Lions coach, who famously delivered the spine-tingling ‘Everest’ speech on the 1997 tour, opted for three players per position in a balanced selection for Scottish Rugby News.

And while some inclusions were expected, Telfer hasn’t been afraid to raise eyebrows, especially with some bold calls in the backline.

Genge leads the English charge up front

Ellis Genge is a nailed-on pick at loosehead, joining Ireland’s Andrew Porter and Scotland’s Rory Sutherland.

Despite fitness concerns, Luke Cowan-Dickie is also included at hooker. There’s no England tighthead in the squad — a rare omission.

In the second row, Maro Itoje and Ollie Chessum are both in, underlining their continued importance at international level.

Back-row packed with English muscle

Telfer has gone heavy on Englishmen in the back-row — naming Ben Earl and Tom Curry at blindside, with Ben Curry making the cut at openside alongside Josh van der Flier and Jac Morgan.

There’s no room for Zach Mercer, Sam Underhill, or Alex Dombrandt, despite all being part of the England conversation at various points.

Surprise call-ups out wide

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the selection of Tommy Freeman and Tom Roebuck on the wing, with both making huge impressions in the Premiership this season.

They’re joined by Fin Smith at fly-half and George Furbank, who has quietly impressed, as one of three full-back options.

Alex Mitchell is the sole English scrum-half picked, with no room for Danny Care or Harry Randall.

No Farrell, Marcus, or Steward

Shockingly, there’s no Owen Farrell, Marcus Smith, or Freddie Steward — three players who’ve carried the England backline for much of the last few years.

“Any selections should be based on the quality of the player,” Telfer told Scotland Rugby News.
“Not the name on the jersey. Some will disagree – but this squad can win in Australia.”
