"They are wrong" - Sir Ian McGeechan disagrees with England fans over who should be next head coach

Rugby legend legend Sir Ian McGeechan has picked his choice to replace Eddie Jones when he steps down from his tol as England head coach in 2023.

The Aussie has a contract to the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup but is under pressure after successive disappointing Six Nations campaigns.

RFU Chief Bill Sweeney's focus on homegrown coaches would rule out former Wales coach Warren Gatland or ex-South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus as Jones' successor.

Based on this revelation, McGeechan has revealed who he thinks may be perfectly placed to take the role.

He wrote in his column for The Telegraph: "Another leading candidate would surely be Steve Borthwick, who has worked in the international environment with both Japan and England, and who is currently doing a magnificent job at Welford Road.

"The fact that his current contract with Leicester Tigers is up in June 2023 also means there would be no tug of war with his club, and if I was in his shoes I would be very keen to take on the role.

"I think those who argue that it is too soon for Borthwick are wrong. He has shown by the way Leicester play that he can produce a side playing attractive winning rugby, and he has the experience to bring that to England.

"I would say, however, that I think it’s probably too soon for Alex Sanderson or Lee Blackett, while Rob Baxter seems to have suggested that he prefers working steadily in the club environment, although he has toured with England."
