RUMOUR | Wasps’ Jimmy Gopperth a wanted man

Jimmy Gopperth has revealed he’s yet to sign a new deal with Wasps as he mulls over a number of offers from around the globe.

The 26-year-old playmaker, who is equally comfortable at fly-half or centre, will be out of contract in June.

“We’re going through that stuff now,” he told The Rugby Paper.

“I still feel I’ve got so much to give and there are offers out there to keep playing. With lockdown it’s a bit slower but hopefully I can get my future sorted, wherever that may be.”

Asked if staying at Wasps was his preference, Gopperth said: “It’s a club I really love and I’ve played here five years and built up good relationships so it’s very high on my list to stay and keep playing here for as long as I can – but there’s a lot of interest from all around which is pretty nice at this stage of my career.”

RUCK understands that Gopperth has received a lot of interest from Japan as well as his former employer Newcastle Falcons following their promotion back to the Gallagher Premiership.

Wasps transfers | 4 wingers they should target to sign

Wasps are reportedly set to lose Marcus Waston in the summer, while Callum Sirker remains out of action following his knee operation.

They’ll need to recruit an additional wide-man or two to their ranks for next season – so here’s a list of four wingers who’d be seen as great signings for the Coventry-based club:

1. D.T.H van der Merwe

Glasgow Warriors’ record try-scorer is to leave the club at the end of the current season. The 34-year-old has scored 54 tries in 123 appearances for the club over eight seasons.

If Wasps could sign the Canada international, who has already confirmed ‘he’d like to play on for a few more years’, he’d certainly guarantee tries.
