Saracens and England Star Poppy Cleall Alleged to Have ‘Headbutted’ Exeter Chiefs Coach in Half Time Altercation

Reports are circulating that England star Poppy Cleall is being investigated by the RFU, after allegations that she ‘headbutted’ an Exeter Chiefs coach.

The altercation is reported to have taken place at halftime in the Premier 15s semi-final, between Saracens and the Chiefs. A report from the Telegraph suggests how Exeter Chiefs Women’s Assistant Coach Steve Salvin was unhappy with Cleall talking to the referee, as the two sides left the pitch for half time.

Salvin is reported to have shouted something towards Cleall, who reacted to the comment by confronting the coach. Cleall is then said to have given Salvin a “soft headbutt”, with Saracens Women scrum coach Juan Figallo also reportedly involved in the incident.

Saracens left the pitch 14-0 up at half time, as tries from Hannah Botterman and Sarah McKenna established a strong lead, with Holly Aitchison adding the conversions. The Chiefs fought back in the second half to level up the scoring through Kate Zackary and Hope Rogers’ tries.

Jess Breach then scored Saracens’ third, to establish daylight after 68 minutes. However, Exeter completed an incredible comeback, as a 24-21 victory was secured by a late Eilidh Sinclair try, and the accurate kicking of Liv McGoverne.

In a statement, the RFU said: “We are investigating reports of an alleged incident. Should a charge be brought, we will provide an update.”

Saracens will now miss out on the Premier 15s Final for the first time in history, as the three-time Champions are unable to retain their crown. Exeter Chiefs will take on Gloucester-Hartpury in the final, after the Cherry and Whites recorded a 21-12 victory over Bristol Bears.

Exeter will head to Gloucester for the final, with the two sides meeting at Kingsholm Stadium on June 24th. Both sides are hoping to win the Premier 15s title for the first time in their history, in what is sizing up to be an explosive finale to the season.
