“Scotland U19s Captain” Newcastle Falcons Add Scottish Centre to Signings List

Newcastle Falcons have confirmed their latest addition to their signings list for next season, in Edinburgh centre Cammy Hutchinson. The 24-year-old has agreed to move south of the border for the next two seasons, and is expected to bring hard-running gain-line breaks to Kingston Park.

The Falcons have certainly been busy with their signings ahead of next season, and becomes their ninth summer signing. Hutchinson joins Murray McCallum (Edinburgh), Bryan Byrne (Bristol), Tim Cardall (Melbourne Rebels), Ollie Leatherbarrow (Exeter Chiefs), Kiran McDonald (ex-Munster), John Kelly (Doncaster), Josh Bainbridge (Coventry) and Ben Redshaw (academy graduate).

Hutchinson has certainly impressed early in his career, and achieved international recognition with Scotland U18s, U19s and U20s. The centre is a true leader of men, and captained the Scotland U19s side.

Hutchinson is ready for the move to the Premiership, and discussed his excitment of the new challenge that awaits. Speaking on the official Newcastle Falcons website, Hutchinson said;

“It’s a really exciting opportunity to play in the Gallagher Premiership and it’s a new challenge for me after playing in the URC with Edinburgh.

“It’s a league I’ve always followed and watched over the years, and with Newcastle being so close to the Scottish border it’s almost a home from home. I can stay connected with family, and my parents actually used to live in Newcastle as well as my brother going to uni there, so it’s a place I’ve already got an affinity with.”

“I was born in England but moved up to Scotland when I was two, when the family re-located to North Berwick. It’s a lovely spot out on the coast near Edinburgh and it’s a rugby-mad town, so that was a great place to be brought up.

“I went to school there and had my last two years at Heriot’s before joining Edinburgh’s academy, having a year out in France and then coming back to take up a pro contract with Edinburgh, but I’ve now got this new challenge with Newcastle which I’m really looking forward to.”

Falcons’ Interim Head Coach Mark Laycock added: “Cammy has been on our radar for quite a while, from when he was back playing for Heriot’s.

“He’s a strong, physical ball-carrier who is a really good gain-line option, and he’s clearly been developing his distribution skills. He’ll give us a good foundation, his core skills are strong and he just offers us that gain-line threat to get us going forward as a team.”
